My 7 year old has always suffered from allergies. It started with eczema when he was about six months old. Just after his first birthday, we discovered he has an egg allergy. Then, at around three years his seasonal allergies started kicking in. He has been tested on several occasions and we know that in addition to his egg allergy, his tree allergies are pretty severe (budding trees in the spring cause his eyes to swell shut) as well as his allergy to cats. In addition to what we know though, the poor kid pretty much always struggles with nasal congestion/coughing. He can never breathe out of both nostrils without some type of difficulty. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s worse but it is always there.
He has tried every allergy medicine under the sun. I have played around with his diet, eliminating dairy. He had his tonsils and adenoids out last year. Nothing has made a significant difference. I’m able to manage his spring allergies by staying ahead of the game with a combination of allergy medication, but I really don’t want him on allergy medicine (that doesn’t seem to make a huge impact) year round for the rest of his life.
Because he’s been struggling with all of this, one of my good friends recommended Juice Plus. She swears by the stuff. Her family has been taking it for five years and she really feels like it has boosted their immune systems. They are sick much less often and if they do get sick, it is less severe. She also told me stories about it helping with allergies, which honestly I thought was crazy. How can a vitamin help with allergies?
I was recently reading The Allergy Book (in my ongoing quest to help my little guy) and low and behold, Juice Plus was mentioned in there too as a possible resource for people who suffer from allergies. Then, I started doing a little research and found other articles citing this as well (here).
And so we decided to give it a try. We are committing to a four month trial (which will take us into the peak of his allergy season) and we’ll see what happens. This post isn’t a plug for Juice Plus. I can’t promote it at this point because we’re only about two weeks in. I just wanted to pass the information along in the event that some of you out there have struggled with similar issues and see if you have any thoughts about it.
Have you tried Juice Plus? Have you found any holistic approaches to managing allergies that has been successful? I would love to hear them!
